Narrative:

We were flying the runway 34R ILS DME at slc. The stepdown fixes are determined off of slc VOR. However, we were receiving DME from the ILS localizer and accomplished our stepdowns off of this DME. Since the slc VOR is north of the field, we actually were descending earlier than depicted on the chart. We corrected our altitude. This is a chart set up that leads a pilot right down the violation path. Please get the word out. Better yet, make the change.
