Narrative:
En route from fat to rno, IRS direct ZOA (121.25) cleared us to climb to FL230. I read back the clearance saying 'flight xyz, cleared to FL230.' I set in the altitude FL230 in the autoplt control panel and the first officer agreed and said 'FL230.' after we reached FL230 ZOA (121.25) said 'what is your altitude?' we said FL230. ZOA said 'you were only cleared to FL220, descend immediately.' we responded saying we had been cleared to FL230. We did comply with the new clearance and descended to FL220. No targets were observed on the TCASII which was in the 40 mi range. The conditions were daylight VFR. Supplemental information from acn 343342: I hear we are cleared to FL230. The captain set FL230 in the altitude window of the MCP and repeats aloud 'FL230.' I acknowledge verbally.
