Narrative:
While on final approach to dirt runway 16 at natomas airpark, I was overtaken and passed by a robinson R22 helicopter. The helicopter appeared from above my right wing, crossed from right to left in front of me, aligned with the same runway as myself and continued to descend. At the closest point, the tail rotor was about 10 ft from my propeller. I made a right turn to distance myself from the helicopter flight path, then entered a low, upwind l-hand pattern from 45 degrees for runway 16 at about 800 ft AGL. After turning base, I flew a dogleg final to avoid overflying arco arena. At the time of the incident I was on straight final aligned with the runway. The 7AC champ I was flying does not have a communications radio, so I was not in radio contact with traffic. Upon landing my aircraft, the helicopter was sitting on the ground just west of the runway. As I taxied by the helicopter it departed the airport. I immediately phoned the operators of the helicopter. I talked to a man about the incident and left my name for point of contact. He seemed unconcerned.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NMAC BTWN NORDO TFC, A 7AC CHAMP AND AN R22 ROTA RY WINGED TFC AT A NON TWR ARPT UNI.
Narrative: WHILE ON FINAL APCH TO DIRT RWY 16 AT NATOMAS AIRPARK, I WAS OVERTAKEN AND PASSED BY A ROBINSON R22 HELI. THE HELI APPEARED FROM ABOVE MY R WING, CROSSED FROM R TO L IN FRONT OF ME, ALIGNED WITH THE SAME RWY AS MYSELF AND CONTINUED TO DSND. AT THE CLOSEST POINT, THE TAIL ROTOR WAS ABOUT 10 FT FROM MY PROP. I MADE A R TURN TO DISTANCE MYSELF FROM THE HELI FLT PATH, THEN ENTERED A LOW, UPWIND L-HAND PATTERN FROM 45 DEGS FOR RWY 16 AT ABOUT 800 FT AGL. AFTER TURNING BASE, I FLEW A DOGLEG FINAL TO AVOID OVERFLYING ARCO ARENA. AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT I WAS ON STRAIGHT FINAL ALIGNED WITH THE RWY. THE 7AC CHAMP I WAS FLYING DOES NOT HAVE A COMS RADIO, SO I WAS NOT IN RADIO CONTACT WITH TFC. UPON LNDG MY ACFT, THE HELI WAS SITTING ON THE GND JUST W OF THE RWY. AS I TAXIED BY THE HELI IT DEPARTED THE ARPT. I IMMEDIATELY PHONED THE OPERATORS OF THE HELI. I TALKED TO A MAN ABOUT THE INCIDENT AND LEFT MY NAME FOR POINT OF CONTACT. HE SEEMED UNCONCERNED.
