Narrative:
Taxiing for departure at rdu we contacted ramp control for pushback and taxi. He told us to contact ground at spot X. My first officer was running the taxi checklist and I taxied past spot X and into the movement area before I realized we had not contacted ground control. We were about 50 ft north of the ramp of taxiway F when I realized the mistake. I immediately stopped and contacted ground for taxi. There were no other aircraft anywhere near us and no conflict occurred. From now on I won't call for or allow the first officer to run the taxi check until we have a taxi clearance.

Narrative: TAXIING FOR DEP AT RDU WE CONTACTED RAMP CTL FOR PUSHBACK AND TAXI. HE TOLD US TO CONTACT GND AT SPOT X.
