Narrative:
After takeoff from saf heading southeast, we picked up a target on TCASII at our 12 O'clock and about 4 mi ahead. Departure control advised us of the VFR traffic and we continued our climb to our assigned altitude of 11000 ft. We soon received a TA showing the target at 10400 ft and ATC cleared us for deviation left or right of course. We continued to climb and turned 25 degrees right as we continued to search visually for the traffic. As we neared 11000 ft and started to level off, we received an RA on TCASII to avoid any descent into the oncoming traffic. At this point we noticed we had already climbed through 11000 ft to a maximum of 11300 ft and leveled momentarily to again search for the traffic. The captain finally spotted the light twin pass our left side and we immediately returned to 11000 ft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR MLG CLBED THROUGH ITS ASSIGNED ALT IN RESPONSE TO A TCASII RA. ARTCC WAS 'UNABLE' TO ALLOW FURTHER CLB AND HAD GIVEN AN EVASIVE TURN INSTEAD. ALTDEV. NON ADHERENCE TO ATC INSTRUCTIONS.
Narrative: AFTER TKOF FROM SAF HEADING SE, WE PICKED UP A TARGET ON TCASII AT OUR 12 O'CLOCK AND ABOUT 4 MI AHEAD. DEP CTL ADVISED US OF THE VFR TFC AND WE CONTINUED OUR CLB TO OUR ASSIGNED ALT OF 11000 FT. WE SOON RECEIVED A TA SHOWING THE TARGET AT 10400 FT AND ATC CLRED US FOR DEV L OR R OF COURSE. WE CONTINUED TO CLB AND TURNED 25 DEGS R AS WE CONTINUED TO SEARCH VISUALLY FOR THE TFC. AS WE NEARED 11000 FT AND STARTED TO LEVEL OFF, WE RECEIVED AN RA ON TCASII TO AVOID ANY DSCNT INTO THE ONCOMING TFC. AT THIS POINT WE NOTICED WE HAD ALREADY CLBED THROUGH 11000 FT TO A MAX OF 11300 FT AND LEVELED MOMENTARILY TO AGAIN SEARCH FOR THE TFC. THE CAPT FINALLY SPOTTED THE LIGHT TWIN PASS OUR L SIDE AND WE IMMEDIATELY RETURNED TO 11000 FT.
