Narrative:
After landing on runway 9R at ord, we rolled to the end and missed right turn on taxiway south. Stopped on runway and tower advised us to continue into paved safety area and make left turn. Aircraft were landing behind us. Error caused by captain thinking taxiway south was at the end of runway 9R. Better lighting and green turnoff lights would help greatly.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT RPTR THOUGHT THE TURN OFF TXWY WAS AT THE END OF THE RWY WHEN IT WAS JUST SHORT OF THE END. RPTR BELIEVES BETTER LIGHTING AND TURNOFF LIGHTS WOULD HELP. TWR CLRED THE ACFT ONTO THE PAVED SAFETY AREA WHICH IS NOT FOR OPERATIONAL USE, BUT BECAUSE ACFT WERE LNDG BEHIND RPTR, HAD TO CLR THE RWY.
