Narrative:

Upon acceleration for takeoff, the front baggage door flew open. I immediately decelerated and applied brakes, but overran the end of the paved runway into the grass. I did not incur any damage to aircraft or landing lights on runway, but taxied back to ramp and inspected plane. The baggage door was locked and checked during preflight, but had not actually latched because of a piece of cardboard from a stowed box. To prevent a recurrence my preflight will now include opening door and determining no obstruction, then shutting and locking. Prior I had only locked and checked the button to see it was stiff.
