The safety officer of a foreign air carrier reports that one of his B737-200 aircraft was holding in position on runway 09R at mia when a B737 of another foreign air carrier was cleared to land on runway 09R. When queried on this, the ATCT local controller demanded that the reporter clear the runway immediately. Night operation.

Narrative:
Night VMC prevailed at time of incident. As customary at mia, when our aircraft approached runway 09R threshold for departure, ground control instructed us to monitor tower frequency. Upon switching, tower instructed us to taxi into position and hold runway 09R. Traffic on a 10 mi final. We immediately complied. After holding in position, tower began issuing takeoff clearance for runway 12 which intersects runway 09R. Approximately 1 min after being cleared into position and hold, the first officer queried tower about our status. Tower then instructed us to clear the runway immediately. This action was accomplished without delay, and as soon as I cleared the approach area, we noticed a B737 overfly approach lights of runway 09R. As the B737 crossed the threshold, I was finishing the 270 degree maneuver to reposition myself for holding short of the runway. About 10 seconds elapsed from the time tower instructed us to leave the runway for the other aircraft crossing the threshold. When I questioned, tower reply was, 'thank you.'

Narrative: NIGHT VMC PREVAILED AT TIME OF INCIDENT. AS CUSTOMARY AT MIA, WHEN OUR ACFT APCHED RWY 09R THRESHOLD FOR DEP, GND CTL INSTRUCTED US TO MONITOR TWR FREQ. UPON SWITCHING, TWR INSTRUCTED US TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD RWY 09R. TFC ON A 10 MI FINAL. WE IMMEDIATELY COMPLIED. AFTER HOLDING IN POS, TWR BEGAN ISSUING TKOF CLRNC FOR RWY 12 WHICH INTERSECTS RWY 09R. APPROX 1 MIN AFTER BEING CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD, THE FO QUERIED TWR ABOUT OUR STATUS. TWR THEN INSTRUCTED US TO CLR THE RWY IMMEDIATELY. THIS ACTION WAS ACCOMPLISHED WITHOUT DELAY, AND AS SOON AS I CLRED THE APCH AREA, WE NOTICED A B737 OVERFLY APCH LIGHTS OF RWY 09R.
