Narrative:
I was climbing to my assigned altitude which I thought was 6000 ft and as I was climbing through 5500 ft ATC said I was assigned 5000 ft not 6000 ft. I told him I repeated 6000 ft and he replied it was not a big deal. There was not a conflict for other aircraft. He then allowed me to continue the climb up to my cruising altitude of 10000 ft and nothing more was said. There was a lot of traffic on the radio so that may have been part of it, he was busy. I was also getting tired for this was during my 4TH hour of this trip so I may have missed the assigned altitude, but he also forgot to correct me for saying the wrong altitude. I feel this is one of those sits that are going to happen no matter what preventive action may be taken. I am just relieved that there was not an aircraft anywhere near me at the time of the event.

HE THEN ALLOWED ME TO CONTINUE THE CLB UP TO MY CRUISING ALT OF 10000 FT AND NOTHING MORE WAS SAID. THERE WAS A LOT OF TFC ON THE RADIO SO THAT MAY HAVE BEEN PART OF IT, HE WAS BUSY.
