Narrative:
On climb out we were leveled at 9000 ft for an air carrier Y jet overtaking us. After the air carrier Y MD80 jet reported us in sight, ATC advised him that we would climb through his altitude and then we were cleared to 12000 ft. Climbing through about 10000 ft the air carrier Y jet passed off our right about 100 ft vertical, 300 ft horizontal. We were surprised that he was so close. Supplemental information from acn 347452: passing through about 10000 ft we got a TA on TCASII and noticed off to our right an air carrier MD80/88 300 ft horizontal, 200 ft vertical. Obviously we were both very surprised.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DEP CTLR POINTED OUT AN LTT TO AN ACR MD80 AND WHEN THE MD80 SAID HE HAD VISUAL CONTACT WITH THE LTT, THE CTLR GAVE THE LTT A CLB THROUGH THE MD80'S ALT. THE LTT HAD THE MD80 ON HIS TCASII, BUT WAS SURPRISED WHEN HE SAW THE MD80 PASS IN CLOSE PROX AS THE LTT WENT THROUGH THE MD80'S ALT.
Narrative: ON CLBOUT WE WERE LEVELED AT 9000 FT FOR AN ACR Y JET OVERTAKING US. AFTER THE ACR Y MD80 JET RPTED US IN SIGHT, ATC ADVISED HIM THAT WE WOULD CLB THROUGH HIS ALT AND THEN WE WERE CLRED TO 12000 FT. CLBING THROUGH ABOUT 10000 FT THE ACR Y JET PASSED OFF OUR R ABOUT 100 FT VERT, 300 FT HORIZ. WE WERE SURPRISED THAT HE WAS SO CLOSE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 347452: PASSING THROUGH ABOUT 10000 FT WE GOT A TA ON TCASII AND NOTICED OFF TO OUR R AN ACR MD80/88 300 FT HORIZ, 200 FT VERT. OBVIOUSLY WE WERE BOTH VERY SURPRISED.
