Narrative:
ASOS equipment continually alarms on certain days, other days not. Also, the monitor presentation is completely unreadable due to errant data and unrecognizable characters, duplication of data lines or the system in continuous update on speci's during rapidly changing WX conditions whereas, there is no current data on the screen to issue pilots as updates cannot be issued until transmission designator is reset. In addition, our entire ASOS system has this annoying habit of locking up during inclement WX. This can only be corrected by completely shutting off the ASOS monitor to reset the logic circuits. In this confign a controller can easily glance over at the screen in response to a pilot request for WX information and would erroneously issue data which was not correct as errant characters or locked up old data may be what is displayed and in fact not the current conditions. This condition is unacceptable!! And has existed since this equipment was installed.

Title: APCH CTLR COMPLAINT ABOUT ASOS SYS. GIVES SEVERAL PROBS ALL OF WHICH ARE VALID AND MANY HAVE BEEN RPTED FROM OTHER LOCATIONS WHERE THE ASOS HAS BEEN INSTALLED.
Narrative: ASOS EQUIP CONTINUALLY ALARMS ON CERTAIN DAYS, OTHER DAYS NOT. ALSO, THE MONITOR PRESENTATION IS COMPLETELY UNREADABLE DUE TO ERRANT DATA AND UNRECOGNIZABLE CHARACTERS, DUPLICATION OF DATA LINES OR THE SYS IN CONTINUOUS UPDATE ON SPECI'S DURING RAPIDLY CHANGING WX CONDITIONS WHEREAS, THERE IS NO CURRENT DATA ON THE SCREEN TO ISSUE PLTS AS UPDATES CANNOT BE ISSUED UNTIL XMISSION DESIGNATOR IS RESET. IN ADDITION, OUR ENTIRE ASOS SYS HAS THIS ANNOYING HABIT OF LOCKING UP DURING INCLEMENT WX. THIS CAN ONLY BE CORRECTED BY COMPLETELY SHUTTING OFF THE ASOS MONITOR TO RESET THE LOGIC CIRCUITS. IN THIS CONFIGN A CTLR CAN EASILY GLANCE OVER AT THE SCREEN IN RESPONSE TO A PLT REQUEST FOR WX INFO AND WOULD ERRONEOUSLY ISSUE DATA WHICH WAS NOT CORRECT AS ERRANT CHARACTERS OR LOCKED UP OLD DATA MAY BE WHAT IS DISPLAYED AND IN FACT NOT THE CURRENT CONDITIONS. THIS CONDITION IS UNACCEPTABLE!! AND HAS EXISTED SINCE THIS EQUIP WAS INSTALLED.
