Narrative:
Our flight crew was flying direct to joliet VOR at 25000 ft and was given clearance to be at 16000 ft 60 mi southwest of joliet VOR. We started our descent too late because we misread the DME since one VOR was set on a different station. ZAU saw our mistake as we started down and stopped our descent at 23000 ft and vectored us 50 degrees left since we were past the assigned point 60 mi southwest of joliet and still too high. The vectored route steered us clear of traffic (which we never saw) and we continued our descent/flight to mdw with no further incident.

Title: AN ACR B737 FLC MISREADS THEIR DME AND DOES NOT START A DSCNT IN TIME TO MAKE A XING ASSIGNMENT. AN ARTCC RADAR CTLR HAS TO VECTOR THEM OFF TRACK TO ACCOMPLISH A CONFLICT-FREE DSCNT.
Narrative: OUR FLC WAS FLYING DIRECT TO JOLIET VOR AT 25000 FT AND WAS GIVEN CLRNC TO BE AT 16000 FT 60 MI SW OF JOLIET VOR. WE STARTED OUR DSCNT TOO LATE BECAUSE WE MISREAD THE DME SINCE ONE VOR WAS SET ON A DIFFERENT STATION. ZAU SAW OUR MISTAKE AS WE STARTED DOWN AND STOPPED OUR DSCNT AT 23000 FT AND VECTORED US 50 DEGS L SINCE WE WERE PAST THE ASSIGNED POINT 60 MI SW OF JOLIET AND STILL TOO HIGH. THE VECTORED RTE STEERED US CLR OF TFC (WHICH WE NEVER SAW) AND WE CONTINUED OUR DSCNT/FLT TO MDW WITH NO FURTHER INCIDENT.
