Narrative:
I was flying right seat in a C152 with a student pilot flying left closed traffic for runway 19L. On base for runway 19L we heard a C172 be cleared for a straight-in to runway 19L. We were already following another aircraft (152?) on base for runway 19L. As the C172 (#2) was too close behind the C152 it began to execute s-turns to increase separation. It then appeared that the C152 began to s-turn for collision avoidance possibly to look for the C172. With both aircraft cranking and banking after only 3 or 4 banks each, they had an near midair collision. #1 landed, #2 went around, then we landed. On the ground we heard the airplane query the tower and I think they reported coming within 100 ft.
