Narrative:
While flying the VOR 4 approach to toledo metcalf on an IFR training flight (foggles) with a flight instructor, a christen eagle bi-plane crossed from our left side to our right, very close, directly into our flight path. He then turned and flew approximately 300 ft off our right side. We had been announcing all our position reports on CTAF and were monitoring unicom. We had not seen or heard any aircraft on the field or in the pattern. Upon querying metcalf unicom about this aircraft, they reported not having any contact with this aircraft either. We believe the aircraft had climbed from our rear left side, then cut across in front. Our plane was clearly visible with anti-collision and landing lights on for the approach. I avoided a potential collision as the bi-plane crossed our flight path, I turned left and began a descent. This was when he turned and flew 300 ft from our right side. Unfortunately, due to the small size of the aircraft identify numbers, we were unable to identify the aircraft by n-numbers.

Title: MULTIPLE RPT REGARDING AN SMA ON PRACTICE INST APCH DEP BEING INTERCEPTED BY A CHRISTEN EAGLE WHO THEN FLEW FORMATION OFF THEIR WING.
Narrative: WHILE FLYING THE VOR 4 APCH TO TOLEDO METCALF ON AN IFR TRAINING FLT (FOGGLES) WITH A FLT INSTRUCTOR, A CHRISTEN EAGLE BI-PLANE CROSSED FROM OUR L SIDE TO OUR R, VERY CLOSE, DIRECTLY INTO OUR FLT PATH. HE THEN TURNED AND FLEW APPROX 300 FT OFF OUR R SIDE. WE HAD BEEN ANNOUNCING ALL OUR POS RPTS ON CTAF AND WERE MONITORING UNICOM. WE HAD NOT SEEN OR HEARD ANY ACFT ON THE FIELD OR IN THE PATTERN. UPON QUERYING METCALF UNICOM ABOUT THIS ACFT, THEY RPTED NOT HAVING ANY CONTACT WITH THIS ACFT EITHER. WE BELIEVE THE ACFT HAD CLBED FROM OUR REAR L SIDE, THEN CUT ACROSS IN FRONT. OUR PLANE WAS CLRLY VISIBLE WITH ANTI-COLLISION AND LNDG LIGHTS ON FOR THE APCH. I AVOIDED A POTENTIAL COLLISION AS THE BI-PLANE CROSSED OUR FLT PATH, I TURNED L AND BEGAN A DSCNT. THIS WAS WHEN HE TURNED AND FLEW 300 FT FROM OUR R SIDE. UNFORTUNATELY, DUE TO THE SMALL SIZE OF THE ACFT IDENT NUMBERS, WE WERE UNABLE TO IDENT THE ACFT BY N-NUMBERS.
