Narrative:

There was a misunderstanding in what the controller said and what the crew thought the controller said. We were approaching memphis on a heading to intercept the VOR runway 27 approach in a descent from 3000 ft to 2000 ft. When the approach clearance was given, the crew also understood the controller wanted at least 180 KTS until 5 DME. Therefore, the crew kept their speed up. Shortly after, the controller asked us our speed and we said 200 KTS. He told us he said 180 KTS until 5 DME. Therefore, we slowed to 180 KTS.
