Narrative:

In sum: on oct/bb/96 the power plant final assembly shop inadvertently installed the wrong type thrust reverser on engine #ZZZ, a JT8D-7 engine type. The engine was later installed on a DC9-30 in the #1 position and released for passenger service. This incorrect reverser should have been installed on a JT8-9 engine only. The part number error occurred just prior to the reverser installation on the engine core. The engine was needed and the work was expedited which contributed to the incident. The aircraft was later routed back to abc and the #1 engine was changed.
