Narrative:
Northeast of dtw airport we were vectored to intercept runway 21R ILS on heading of approximately 240 degrees. Captain (PF) intercepted runway 21L localizer with my HSI CDI needle pegged to the right because I was on proper runway 21R localizer frequency. I had received the identify for runway 21R but when I saw his CDI lined up I assumed my localizer was inoperative. I then verified (he did too) that he had proper localizer tuned in his navigation heading. He did have wrong frequency tuned and put proper runway 21R in before intercepting again back towards the west. Tower asked if we were VFR. We said no and were lining up on proper runway (runway 21R) at this time. We broke out at 800 ft AGL, lined up on proper runway 21R. No conflict with any aircraft occurred. Improper response to checklist 'approach frequency and courses' caused this. Captain responded with 'checked, set and markers on' instead of proper '110.7, and 215 degree radial.' this, along with the so lack of vigilance, may have helped this situation from occurring.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DC10-40 LINES UP WITH WRONG RWY DURING APCH INTO DTW.
Narrative: NE OF DTW ARPT WE WERE VECTORED TO INTERCEPT RWY 21R ILS ON HDG OF APPROX 240 DEGS. CAPT (PF) INTERCEPTED RWY 21L LOC WITH MY HSI CDI NEEDLE PEGGED TO THE R BECAUSE I WAS ON PROPER RWY 21R LOC FREQ. I HAD RECEIVED THE IDENT FOR RWY 21R BUT WHEN I SAW HIS CDI LINED UP I ASSUMED MY LOC WAS INOP. I THEN VERIFIED (HE DID TOO) THAT HE HAD PROPER LOC TUNED IN HIS NAV HDG. HE DID HAVE WRONG FREQ TUNED AND PUT PROPER RWY 21R IN BEFORE INTERCEPTING AGAIN BACK TOWARDS THE W. TWR ASKED IF WE WERE VFR. WE SAID NO AND WERE LINING UP ON PROPER RWY (RWY 21R) AT THIS TIME. WE BROKE OUT AT 800 FT AGL, LINED UP ON PROPER RWY 21R. NO CONFLICT WITH ANY ACFT OCCURRED. IMPROPER RESPONSE TO CHKLIST 'APCH FREQ AND COURSES' CAUSED THIS. CAPT RESPONDED WITH 'CHKED, SET AND MARKERS ON' INSTEAD OF PROPER '110.7, AND 215 DEG RADIAL.' THIS, ALONG WITH THE SO LACK OF VIGILANCE, MAY HAVE HELPED THIS SIT FROM OCCURRING.
