Narrative:
Captain was PF. This is first officer, reporting. We were cleared to 13000 ft. At 11700 ft received frequency change. I acknowledged the frequency change as I looked down at the pedestal to dial in the change and immediately called out one to go. Our rate of climb was such that when I looked up I heard the alert go off indicating something was amiss and I noticed the aircraft climbing rapidly through 13300 ft. I called out 13000 ft, level off at 13000 ft, go back down to 13000 ft and we did. No conflict with other traffic and when I checked in with center there was no mention of our altitude deviation bust. Supplemental information from acn 350954: captain hand flying to 13000 ft, received frequency change and ignored altitude passing 13300 ft. Reduced power and topped out about 13500 ft. I was lax in letting my attention wander during level off. In future I will try to be more vigilant during climb out.

Title: B757 CLBING TO 13000 FT, CAPT HAND FLYING THE ACFT DISTR BY FREQ CHANGE OVERSHOT ALT 500 FT. RETURNED IMMEDIATELY TO 13000 FT, NO CONFLICT.
Narrative: CAPT WAS PF. THIS IS FO, RPTING. WE WERE CLRED TO 13000 FT. AT 11700 FT RECEIVED FREQ CHANGE. I ACKNOWLEDGED THE FREQ CHANGE AS I LOOKED DOWN AT THE PEDESTAL TO DIAL IN THE CHANGE AND IMMEDIATELY CALLED OUT ONE TO GO. OUR RATE OF CLB WAS SUCH THAT WHEN I LOOKED UP I HEARD THE ALERT GO OFF INDICATING SOMETHING WAS AMISS AND I NOTICED THE ACFT CLBING RAPIDLY THROUGH 13300 FT. I CALLED OUT 13000 FT, LEVEL OFF AT 13000 FT, GO BACK DOWN TO 13000 FT AND WE DID. NO CONFLICT WITH OTHER TFC AND WHEN I CHKED IN WITH CTR THERE WAS NO MENTION OF OUR ALTDEV BUST. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 350954: CAPT HAND FLYING TO 13000 FT, RECEIVED FREQ CHANGE AND IGNORED ALT PASSING 13300 FT. REDUCED PWR AND TOPPED OUT ABOUT 13500 FT. I WAS LAX IN LETTING MY ATTN WANDER DURING LEVEL OFF. IN FUTURE I WILL TRY TO BE MORE VIGILANT DURING CLBOUT.
