Narrative:
Took night currency instruction as part of wings. After I finished with instructor, I departed MAI0 for orh. In my rush to get home, I left navigation lights and beacon off. I used the checklist but skipped some items. I also left the generator/automation switch off and flew over on battery only -- with landing light and strobes only on. My radios died as I taxied to my hangar. The alternator problem was due to a procedural change that was not on my checklist. I now start on battery only and confirm 'discharge' after start to detect a stuck starter. I then engage the alternator and confirm charging. This is the second or third time I have forgotten this. My checklist is now changed. I need to slow down and be more methodical. My instructor told me I 'scurry around like a chipmunk' and need to slow down.
