Narrative:
After takeoff we were unable to retract the landing gear. We completed the emergency procedure checklist with no success, and returned for a normal landing. Maintenance found the main landing gear bypass handle unlocked. The first officer had completed the origination preflight prior to the flight. He recalls seeing the bypass handle flush with the fuselage, so it did not attract his attention any further. The first officer does not recall specifically seeing if the lock was secured.
