Narrative:
On rotation from hnl the aircraft stick shaker stall warning activated. Thrust was pushed to mechanical stops. Airplane lifted off ground but stick shaker continued. Aircraft confign was not changed and airspeed was allowed to increase. (Gear down, flaps 15 degrees.) at 1000 ft tower was notified of our problem and a turn back to the field was requested. Maximum altitude and airspeed reached was 2500 ft, 220 KTS, stick shaker still on. Fuel dumping began within a few mins after takeoff. Approximately 5 mins after takeoff the stick shaker warning stopped. An emergency was declared at about the time fuel dumping began, and when handed over to hnl departure control. ATC vectored us for an approach to the ILS runway 4R. Fuel dumping was secured on approximately a 15 mi final. An uneventful landing on runway 4R was made. After landing tower was notified to cancel the emergency. Cause of the false stall warning stick shaker is still unknown.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DC10-30 CREW ELECTS TO RETURN LAND HNL WHEN THEY GET A CONTINUOUS STALL WARNING BEGINNING WHEN THEY ROTATED FOR TKOF.
Narrative: ON ROTATION FROM HNL THE ACFT STICK SHAKER STALL WARNING ACTIVATED. THRUST WAS PUSHED TO MECHANICAL STOPS. AIRPLANE LIFTED OFF GND BUT STICK SHAKER CONTINUED. ACFT CONFIGN WAS NOT CHANGED AND AIRSPD WAS ALLOWED TO INCREASE. (GEAR DOWN, FLAPS 15 DEGS.) AT 1000 FT TWR WAS NOTIFIED OF OUR PROB AND A TURN BACK TO THE FIELD WAS REQUESTED. MAX ALT AND AIRSPD REACHED WAS 2500 FT, 220 KTS, STICK SHAKER STILL ON. FUEL DUMPING BEGAN WITHIN A FEW MINS AFTER TKOF. APPROX 5 MINS AFTER TKOF THE STICK SHAKER WARNING STOPPED. AN EMER WAS DECLARED AT ABOUT THE TIME FUEL DUMPING BEGAN, AND WHEN HANDED OVER TO HNL DEP CTL. ATC VECTORED US FOR AN APCH TO THE ILS RWY 4R. FUEL DUMPING WAS SECURED ON APPROX A 15 MI FINAL. AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG ON RWY 4R WAS MADE. AFTER LNDG TWR WAS NOTIFIED TO CANCEL THE EMER. CAUSE OF THE FALSE STALL WARNING STICK SHAKER IS STILL UNKNOWN.
