Narrative:
Problem was a red gear light with 3 green. Solved by recycle of gear after missed approach due also to GPWS at 600 ft AGL. Missed approach normal except 300 ft overshoot altitude due tower changing altitude from 3500 ft to 2500 ft. Main reason for report: at time of lowering gear and gear down and locked 3 green -- red gear (displacement) light on -- I normally would have called either for checklist or move gear handle to be sure it's seated. I did neither but said 'we have 3 green, if it's not down the confign warning or GPWS will sound off.' this was relating to 2 past articles printed in company newsletter but referring to the gear (green) down lights. This has been a common abnormal procedure on all aircraft over the yrs with same procedure. (Cycle gear) why would I revert to newsletter articles at that time. 1) they were strongly worded to prevent unnecessary missed approachs due to green gear down lights burned out or inoperative. 2) flight time lhr-del (approximately 9 hour) and time zones from ny (jfk) and associated fatigue factor. We did learn something -- the red gear light will not activate the confign warning at 800 ft AGL but will activate the GPWS 'too low gear' at 500-600 ft AGL.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: INTERNATIONAL ACR ON APCH HAS INDICATION OF UNSAFE NOSE GEAR. PIC ELECTS TO CONTINUE APCH TO SEE IF ACFT'S INTEGRATED SUBSYS INDICATE A SAFE OR UNSAFE CONDITION. NO CHKLIST USE DESIRED OR IMPLEMENTED. GPWS ACTIVATED BY SIT PROX TO GND, GAR EXECUTED. GEAR OK NEXT EXTENSION.
Narrative: PROB WAS A RED GEAR LIGHT WITH 3 GREEN. SOLVED BY RECYCLE OF GEAR AFTER MISSED APCH DUE ALSO TO GPWS AT 600 FT AGL. MISSED APCH NORMAL EXCEPT 300 FT OVERSHOOT ALT DUE TWR CHANGING ALT FROM 3500 FT TO 2500 FT. MAIN REASON FOR RPT: AT TIME OF LOWERING GEAR AND GEAR DOWN AND LOCKED 3 GREEN -- RED GEAR (DISPLACEMENT) LIGHT ON -- I NORMALLY WOULD HAVE CALLED EITHER FOR CHKLIST OR MOVE GEAR HANDLE TO BE SURE IT'S SEATED. THIS HAS BEEN A COMMON ABNORMAL PROC ON ALL ACFT OVER THE YRS WITH SAME PROC. (CYCLE GEAR) WHY WOULD I REVERT TO NEWSLETTER ARTICLES AT THAT TIME. 1) THEY WERE STRONGLY WORDED TO PREVENT UNNECESSARY MISSED APCHS DUE TO GREEN GEAR DOWN LIGHTS BURNED OUT OR INOP. 2) FLT TIME LHR-DEL (APPROX 9 HR) AND TIME ZONES FROM NY (JFK) AND ASSOCIATED FATIGUE FACTOR. WE DID LEARN SOMETHING -- THE RED GEAR LIGHT WILL NOT ACTIVATE THE CONFIGN WARNING AT 800 FT AGL BUT WILL ACTIVATE THE GPWS 'TOO LOW GEAR' AT 500-600 FT AGL.
