Narrative:
Student was doing the localizer back course 23 approach. He got confused and was having trouble. I took over the plane. At that time tower started reading our clearance. I responded back to the radio call. At this time we were VOR inbound, which they told us to report. My student started to do his T's and hit the VFR button instead of the clock button. Tower then came on and asked why we were on 1200. I explained to them what just happened. They didn't understand what I meant by VFR button. So, I started to explain to them, when my student set up to land and landed. I then noticed that we landed without clearance. Tower didn't say anything, but I know that we were in the wrong.
