Narrative:
Both aircraft used the lga runway 22 lda-a approach. B727 was behind F28. Approach control turned B727 onto the lda approach tight behind F28. Airspds were complied with by B727. B727 requested visual approach in order to increase separation, align with runway, and avoid low altitude turning required to align with runway after mdh. B727 was given visual approach clearance. While in turning maneuver to align with runway, I lost sight of F28. TCASII showed F28 about 1 1/2 mi ahead, B727 was about 1100 ft MSL. Since I lost sight of F28 and copilot did also while he was tuning tower frequency in, I elected to go around. I am sure we did not get close enough to describe this as a near miss, no TCASII TA. I am just not sure how close we were. I am sure we were too close to land behind F28, considering we were 20 KTS faster at our vref than his, going around was prudent.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B727 TURNED IN TOO CLOSE TO PRECEDING F28 AT SLOWER APCH SPD. REQUESTS VISUAL APCH FOR ALIGNING AND INCREASED IN TRAIL SEPARATION. LOSES SIGHT OF F28 AND MAKES A MISSED APCH. OPDEV.
Narrative: BOTH ACFT USED THE LGA RWY 22 LDA-A APCH. B727 WAS BEHIND F28. APCH CTL TURNED B727 ONTO THE LDA APCH TIGHT BEHIND F28. AIRSPDS WERE COMPLIED WITH BY B727. B727 REQUESTED VISUAL APCH IN ORDER TO INCREASE SEPARATION, ALIGN WITH RWY, AND AVOID LOW ALT TURNING REQUIRED TO ALIGN WITH RWY AFTER MDH. B727 WAS GIVEN VISUAL APCH CLRNC. WHILE IN TURNING MANEUVER TO ALIGN WITH RWY, I LOST SIGHT OF F28. TCASII SHOWED F28 ABOUT 1 1/2 MI AHEAD, B727 WAS ABOUT 1100 FT MSL. SINCE I LOST SIGHT OF F28 AND COPLT DID ALSO WHILE HE WAS TUNING TWR FREQ IN, I ELECTED TO GAR.
