Narrative:
No situation yet. Xxxaaa air taxi services based at fresno have been in effect for yrs. The city now has started police helicopter operations based at fresno. They use the call sign xxxabaa. The similar call sign will lead to confusion on both the tower frequency and the approach control frequency. The city insists on using xxxabaa. I feel this will lead to a situation eventually. It seems a call sign change for the city would be the best/easiest answer.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CTLR COMPLAINT ABOUT CALL SIGN USED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT HELIS OPERATING OUT OF FAT ARPT AND IN THE LCL AREA. SAYS TOO SIMILAR SOUNDING TO A REGIONAL ACR THAT OPERATES OUT OF THERE TOO.

THE SIMILAR CALL SIGN WILL LEAD TO CONFUSION ON BOTH THE TWR FREQ AND THE APCH CTL FREQ. THE CITY INSISTS ON USING XXXABAA. I FEEL THIS WILL LEAD TO A SIT EVENTUALLY. IT SEEMS A CALL SIGN CHANGE FOR THE CITY WOULD BE THE BEST/EASIEST ANSWER.
