Narrative:

During climb out from mem our flight was assigned 5000 ft. Company policy dictates a '1000 ft to go' and a '3000 ft to go' (no alerter installed) all prior to reaching an assigned altitude. I was having difficulty trimming the aircraft and wasn't paying attention to the altitude. Neither was the captain, as he was busy doing paperwork. It wasn't until ATC cleared us to 6000 ft that we noticed we were climbing through 5700 ft.
