Narrative:
First officer found oil leak on right engine, called maintenance to correct leak. First officer and I both performed required preflight and walkaround inspections. Meanwhile mechanic had finished working write-up and then ran the right engine and rechked for any oil leaks. Finding no leaks, cleared the books and called clear of aircraft, ready to board. I and the first officer were both standing with and near mechanic when he closed the cowling and it appeared he closed it tight. After boarding and taxiing and taking off or right after takeoff, flight attendant called on interphone, advised right cowl was up! First officer also advised me of this at same time. Climbed to about 1200 ft, cowl separated from aircraft as we turned a right downwind for landing on runway 9R at mia. There were no adverse handling problems noted during the 6 min flight. After landing, inspection confirmed cowling did separate. Always! Always! Rechk behind maintenance. During taxi in, we did not contact ground control due to discussing what happened. Also before we taxied, mechanic gave 3 thumbs up, engine was good to go.

AFTER BOARDING AND TAXIING AND TAKING OFF OR RIGHT AFTER TKOF, FLT ATTENDANT CALLED ON INTERPHONE, ADVISED R COWL WAS UP! FO ALSO ADVISED ME OF THIS AT SAME TIME. CLBED TO ABOUT 1200 FT, COWL SEPARATED FROM ACFT AS WE TURNED A R DOWNWIND FOR LNDG ON RWY 9R AT MIA. THERE WERE NO ADVERSE HANDLING PROBS NOTED DURING THE 6 MIN FLT. AFTER LNDG, INSPECTION CONFIRMED COWLING DID SEPARATE. ALWAYS! ALWAYS! RECHK BEHIND MAINT. DURING TAXI IN, WE DID NOT CONTACT GND CTL DUE TO DISCUSSING WHAT HAPPENED. ALSO BEFORE WE TAXIED, MECH GAVE 3 THUMBS UP, ENG WAS GOOD TO GO.
