Narrative:
On the above date my instrument student and I were departing N07 to go up to neely NDB (southwest) to practice NDB holds. To stay out of swf class D, while holding, we were going to climb up to 3500 ft. At the southern tip of the wanaque reservoir (approximately 6 NM north of N07) we were at 2800 ft MSL and climbing to 3000 ft MSL. I saw an air carrier X ATR flying southwest approximately 1 NM in front of us and 1000 ft above us. We altered course to the right and descended back down to 2500 ft MSL. After looking at the sectional I realized we had only been clear to the north of new york's class B airspace by 2 NM. Although the traffic conflict was easily resolved in the future we need to be more conscious of the surrounding airspace and allow ourselves to be well clear of any airspace before any altitude changes.

Title: DURING AN INST FLT LESSON, THE INSTRUCTOR PLT HAD A CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH ANOTHER ACFT.
Narrative: ON THE ABOVE DATE MY INST STUDENT AND I WERE DEPARTING N07 TO GO UP TO NEELY NDB (SW) TO PRACTICE NDB HOLDS. TO STAY OUT OF SWF CLASS D, WHILE HOLDING, WE WERE GOING TO CLB UP TO 3500 FT. AT THE SOUTHERN TIP OF THE WANAQUE RESERVOIR (APPROX 6 NM N OF N07) WE WERE AT 2800 FT MSL AND CLBING TO 3000 FT MSL. I SAW AN ACR X ATR FLYING SW APPROX 1 NM IN FRONT OF US AND 1000 FT ABOVE US. WE ALTERED COURSE TO THE R AND DSNDED BACK DOWN TO 2500 FT MSL. AFTER LOOKING AT THE SECTIONAL I REALIZED WE HAD ONLY BEEN CLR TO THE N OF NEW YORK'S CLASS B AIRSPACE BY 2 NM. ALTHOUGH THE TFC CONFLICT WAS EASILY RESOLVED IN THE FUTURE WE NEED TO BE MORE CONSCIOUS OF THE SURROUNDING AIRSPACE AND ALLOW OURSELVES TO BE WELL CLR OF ANY AIRSPACE BEFORE ANY ALT CHANGES.
