Narrative:
On taxi out for departure from atl's ramp X, spot yy, we were given the following clearance: taxi behind the air carrier X tri-jet to runway 27R via taxiway M. The captain misunderstood the clearance and instead of taxiing via taxiway M, followed the air carrier X tri-jet taxiing on taxiway left. I was busy doing the taxi checklist and was not aware of our mistake. Ground advised us to transition over to taxiway M. No conflict with any aircraft occurred. Lesson learned: both pilots must monitor each other, even when performing pilot specific tasks.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF A B737-300 MISUNDERSTOOD TAXI INSTRUCTIONS AND FOLLOWED ANOTHER ACFT INSTEAD OF XING BEHIND THE OTHER ACFT AND FOLLOWING THE INTENDED TXWY. ATC INTERVENED AND PROVIDED A TRANSITION RTE TO BRING RPTR'S ACFT BACK TO THE INTENDED RTE.
Narrative: ON TAXI OUT FOR DEP FROM ATL'S RAMP X, SPOT YY, WE WERE GIVEN THE FOLLOWING CLRNC: TAXI BEHIND THE ACR X TRI-JET TO RWY 27R VIA TXWY M. THE CAPT MISUNDERSTOOD THE CLRNC AND INSTEAD OF TAXIING VIA TXWY M, FOLLOWED THE ACR X TRI-JET TAXIING ON TXWY L. I WAS BUSY DOING THE TAXI CHKLIST AND WAS NOT AWARE OF OUR MISTAKE. GND ADVISED US TO TRANSITION OVER TO TXWY M. NO CONFLICT WITH ANY ACFT OCCURRED. LESSON LEARNED: BOTH PLTS MUST MONITOR EACH OTHER, EVEN WHEN PERFORMING PLT SPECIFIC TASKS.
