Narrative:
First officer flying leg. My attention was diverted to discussing write- up with so, heard center call concerning crossing restr (12000 ft) at canuk (inbound on STAR in atl). His reply was that we will be able to make restr. I immediately checked DME on FMS and saw that we were still 26 DME from canuk at 17000 ft. Also switched to atl VOR and verified 40 DME (we were in fact at canuk). FMS was in error and was undetected prior to that point. We were given a 360 degree right descending turn with no 'deals' (traffic conflicts). I reset navigation and waypoint page on FMS and it instantly showed the proper DME (40). Both of us checked mileage after loading FMS in fll and was within 2 mi of flight plan (we noted this on flight plan). ATC was queried and stated no traffic conflicts. FMS entered in logbook with no explanation as to why this happened.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: L1011 ON SINCA 3 STAR FAILED TO MAKE 12000 FT XING AT CANUK. FMS HAD CHKED WITHIN 2 MI WHEN PROGRAMMED AT FLL, BUT NOW INDICATED 26 MI TO CANUK. ZTL ADVISED FLT WAS OVER CANUK AND ISSUED 360 DEG TURN TO GET DOWN. CHKING VOR DME CONFIRMED ERROR IN FMS. RESET NAV AND WAYPOINT PAGE ON FMS AND IT IMMEDIATELY CORRECTED.
Narrative: FO FLYING LEG. MY ATTN WAS DIVERTED TO DISCUSSING WRITE- UP WITH SO, HEARD CTR CALL CONCERNING XING RESTR (12000 FT) AT CANUK (INBOUND ON STAR IN ATL). HIS REPLY WAS THAT WE WILL BE ABLE TO MAKE RESTR. I IMMEDIATELY CHKED DME ON FMS AND SAW THAT WE WERE STILL 26 DME FROM CANUK AT 17000 FT. ALSO SWITCHED TO ATL VOR AND VERIFIED 40 DME (WE WERE IN FACT AT CANUK). FMS WAS IN ERROR AND WAS UNDETECTED PRIOR TO THAT POINT. WE WERE GIVEN A 360 DEG R DSNDING TURN WITH NO 'DEALS' (TFC CONFLICTS). I RESET NAV AND WAYPOINT PAGE ON FMS AND IT INSTANTLY SHOWED THE PROPER DME (40). BOTH OF US CHKED MILEAGE AFTER LOADING FMS IN FLL AND WAS WITHIN 2 MI OF FLT PLAN (WE NOTED THIS ON FLT PLAN). ATC WAS QUERIED AND STATED NO TFC CONFLICTS. FMS ENTERED IN LOGBOOK WITH NO EXPLANATION AS TO WHY THIS HAPPENED.
