Narrative:
In cruise FL260, airspeed 280 KTS, assigned over sby, md. Nose pitched up, autoplt began to trim down. Aircraft climbed approximately 150 ft then dropped approximately 500-600 ft in severe turbulence. Seat belt sign was on at time of incident. Contacted ATC for lower altitude and began descent to FL220. Severe turbulence ended in approximately 30 seconds below FL253. First officer made severe turbulence PIREP to ATC, communicated with cabin attendants to establish any injuries in rear. Was notified 'B' flight attendant in galley had struck her knee on floor of rear galley. An emergency was not declared, but priority handling was requested to ATC and granted for direct to ric where emt met the aircraft and removed our 'B' flight attendant to hospital for medical determination. It was determined at the hospital she had broken her knee.
