Narrative:
ATC facility: dfw approach/dfw tower. Location: dfw/354/10. We were given a 70 degree intercept angle to runway 17C by approach control and told to hold that heading until intercepting final. Copilot was flying with autoplt engaged. I thought we were going to overshoot and told copilot to initiate turn to final. He complied, but not at a sufficient rate to prevent the overshoot. In the turn, we received a brief climb RA from TCASII for traffic flying the approach to runway 18R. Neither approach control nor tower said anything about the overshoot. Contributing factors included that we were looking right into the sun, making it difficult to see the runway in the turn, and an overreliance on the autoplt to complete a satisfactory intercept at a large intercept angle.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NON ADHERENCE TO ATC CLRNC BY FLC IN AN S80. HEADING TRACK DEV WHEN GIVEN AN ILS INTERCEPT VECTOR OF 70 DEGS TO THE APCH COURSE. OPDEV.
Narrative: ATC FACILITY: DFW APCH/DFW TWR. LOCATION: DFW/354/10. WE WERE GIVEN A 70 DEG INTERCEPT ANGLE TO RWY 17C BY APCH CTL AND TOLD TO HOLD THAT HEADING UNTIL INTERCEPTING FINAL. COPLT WAS FLYING WITH AUTOPLT ENGAGED. I THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO OVERSHOOT AND TOLD COPLT TO INITIATE TURN TO FINAL. HE COMPLIED, BUT NOT AT A SUFFICIENT RATE TO PREVENT THE OVERSHOOT. IN THE TURN, WE RECEIVED A BRIEF CLB RA FROM TCASII FOR TFC FLYING THE APCH TO RWY 18R. NEITHER APCH CTL NOR TWR SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THE OVERSHOOT. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS INCLUDED THAT WE WERE LOOKING RIGHT INTO THE SUN, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO SEE THE RWY IN THE TURN, AND AN OVERRELIANCE ON THE AUTOPLT TO COMPLETE A SATISFACTORY INTERCEPT AT A LARGE INTERCEPT ANGLE.
