Narrative:
On a training flight from fok to frg (act home base), I instructed my student to climb and maintain 3000 ft, on a wbound heading. After requesting frequency change from fok ATC and prior to contacting new york approach, I intentionally failed the right engine on the PA23-250 as my student went through the emergency procedures I instructed and critiqued him. Several mi later, while still critiquing his engine failure procedures I called new york approach, thinking we were already speaking to ATC and advised them that we did not receive instructions to switch frequencys, when in fact we had not contacted approach control at all. The controller told us we had illegally entered class C airspace, and gave us an over- the-air briefing on the correct procedures. I attribute this airspace incursion on a lack by my part of situational awareness, and have learned the necessity of increased vigilance, and awareness during instructional training flts.

Title: AN SMT ON VFR TRAINING FLT PENETRATES ISP CLASS C AIRSPACE WITHOUT AUTH. INSTRUCTOR PLT FORGETS TO CONTACT APCH CTL GOING THROUGH AIRSPACE. BOTH INSTRUCTOR AND STUDENT DISTRACTED BY R ENG SIMULATED FAILURE.
Narrative: ON A TRAINING FLT FROM FOK TO FRG (ACT HOME BASE), I INSTRUCTED MY STUDENT TO CLB AND MAINTAIN 3000 FT, ON A WBOUND HEADING. AFTER REQUESTING FREQ CHANGE FROM FOK ATC AND PRIOR TO CONTACTING NEW YORK APCH, I INTENTIONALLY FAILED THE R ENG ON THE PA23-250 AS MY STUDENT WENT THROUGH THE EMER PROCS I INSTRUCTED AND CRITIQUED HIM. SEVERAL MI LATER, WHILE STILL CRITIQUING HIS ENG FAILURE PROCS I CALLED NEW YORK APCH, THINKING WE WERE ALREADY SPEAKING TO ATC AND ADVISED THEM THAT WE DID NOT RECEIVE INSTRUCTIONS TO SWITCH FREQS, WHEN IN FACT WE HAD NOT CONTACTED APCH CTL AT ALL. THE CTLR TOLD US WE HAD ILLEGALLY ENTERED CLASS C AIRSPACE, AND GAVE US AN OVER- THE-AIR BRIEFING ON THE CORRECT PROCS. I ATTRIBUTE THIS AIRSPACE INCURSION ON A LACK BY MY PART OF SITUATIONAL AWARENESS, AND HAVE LEARNED THE NECESSITY OF INCREASED VIGILANCE, AND AWARENESS DURING INSTRUCTIONAL TRAINING FLTS.
