Narrative:
Lead flight attendant noticed a smell in the forward galley. I went to the galley door and smelled smoke. Arriving in the cockpit, I heard the circuit breaker pop. It was the battery charger circuit breaker. The first officer went outside to see if smoke was coming from the east&east compartment. He verified the affirmative. I had the passenger exit the aircraft through the main cabin door. The first officer called for fire assistance. A deadheading first officer on the jetway also assisted in calling fire trucks and alerting the station. The fire department removed the batteries, which were smoking. There were no injuries to any persons and no aircraft damage. Maintenance arrived later and replaced the 2 batteries, battery charger and temperature sensor.
