Narrative:
Departed cfj en route to azo. Contacted grissom approach 20 mi south of kokomo, in, for VFR flight following while cruising at 3000 ft MSL. Grissom approach was unable to receive with my hand microphone and my only VOR receiver was not working. Switched to a headset and tried to enter course in new hand-held GPS. Grissom was unable to receive transponder squawk. While attempting to deal with a series of 3 avionics failures concurrently, my course varied such that I inadvertently incurred grissom class D airspace without permission. Class D ceiling is 3300 ft MSL and I passed within 1 mi of runway at 3000 ft MSL. Controller noted the incursion and advised that there was no other traffic at the time. Pilot was lax in navigation probably due to the security of being in my local area, the excellent VFR WX and knowledge that contact was being made with the only controled field close to the route of flight. Incursion could have been avoided by dealing with 1 avionics failure at a time while maintaining good pilotage navigation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SMA ACFT. RPTR PLT HAD RADIO PROB AND UNABLE TO CONTACT APPROPRIATE TRACON FACILITY FOR PENETRATION OF CLASS D AIRSPACE. NAV ERROR BROUGHT RPTR INSIDE CLASS D WITHOUT COM.
Narrative: DEPARTED CFJ ENRTE TO AZO. CONTACTED GRISSOM APCH 20 MI S OF KOKOMO, IN, FOR VFR FLT FOLLOWING WHILE CRUISING AT 3000 FT MSL. GRISSOM APCH WAS UNABLE TO RECEIVE WITH MY HAND MIKE AND MY ONLY VOR RECEIVER WAS NOT WORKING. SWITCHED TO A HEADSET AND TRIED TO ENTER COURSE IN NEW HAND-HELD GPS. GRISSOM WAS UNABLE TO RECEIVE XPONDER SQUAWK. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO DEAL WITH A SERIES OF 3 AVIONICS FAILURES CONCURRENTLY, MY COURSE VARIED SUCH THAT I INADVERTENTLY INCURRED GRISSOM CLASS D AIRSPACE WITHOUT PERMISSION. CLASS D CEILING IS 3300 FT MSL AND I PASSED WITHIN 1 MI OF RWY AT 3000 FT MSL. CTLR NOTED THE INCURSION AND ADVISED THAT THERE WAS NO OTHER TFC AT THE TIME. PLT WAS LAX IN NAV PROBABLY DUE TO THE SECURITY OF BEING IN MY LCL AREA, THE EXCELLENT VFR WX AND KNOWLEDGE THAT CONTACT WAS BEING MADE WITH THE ONLY CTLED FIELD CLOSE TO THE RTE OF FLT. INCURSION COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED BY DEALING WITH 1 AVIONICS FAILURE AT A TIME WHILE MAINTAINING GOOD PILOTAGE NAV.
