Established on final to runway 9R atl. Approaching the FAF, encountered downdraft due to windshear. Altitude loss was approximately 800-1000 ft. Initiated recovery and go around. ATIS winds 090 degrees, 17 KTS gusting to 24 KTS. Tower winds 105 degrees, 15 KTS gusting to 28 KTS. Subsequent approach normal.
