Narrative:
In sum: I taped up an airplane with strapping tape. The horizontal stabilizer outer plastic piece was cracked. Tape has temporarily resolved this problem until a replacement part can be installed. Supposedly, under part 91 operation, this tape repair can be performed by the pilot. But under part 135 this action would be prohibited. This was a flight under part 135 rules. The crack was discovered half way into the day's events. It was an inadvertent error, being unaware of the differences between part 91 and part 135. Maybe even under part 91, I went too far. But I assumed a pilot could perform such 'light maintenance.' an honest mistake, but it would be better and legally correct to have an a&P mechanic perform the above duties.
