Narrative:
Runway 5 and 23 at clt crosses taxiway F. Taxiing south on taxiway east, I was completing the last few takeoff checklist items and thought runway 5 was some distance ahead when the first officer said 'that's runway 5.' I stopped short of the runway but my nose had gone over the hold short line. I called tower and told them I had crossed the line but was off the runway. They said if I was ready for takeoff it was not a problem I could go. I did not want to rush the checklist items so I asked to cross runway 5 and clear the area for traffic. Tower agreed. Subsequent takeoff normal. Lessons learned: 1) do not assume you know where you are -- verify it. 2) finish the checklist 'stopped' at the hold short. Good job by the first officer in recognizing a potential problem and calling it out. It saved me from possibly taxiing across an active runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FOKKER 100 ALMOST TAXIED ACROSS AN ACTIVE RWY. FO GAVE WARNING AND ACFT WAS STOPPED WITH NOSE PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE. TWR THEN CLRED THEM ACROSS.
Narrative: RWY 5 AND 23 AT CLT CROSSES TXWY F. TAXIING S ON TXWY E, I WAS COMPLETING THE LAST FEW TKOF CHKLIST ITEMS AND THOUGHT RWY 5 WAS SOME DISTANCE AHEAD WHEN THE FO SAID 'THAT'S RWY 5.' I STOPPED SHORT OF THE RWY BUT MY NOSE HAD GONE OVER THE HOLD SHORT LINE. I CALLED TWR AND TOLD THEM I HAD CROSSED THE LINE BUT WAS OFF THE RWY. THEY SAID IF I WAS READY FOR TKOF IT WAS NOT A PROB I COULD GO. I DID NOT WANT TO RUSH THE CHKLIST ITEMS SO I ASKED TO CROSS RWY 5 AND CLR THE AREA FOR TFC. TWR AGREED. SUBSEQUENT TKOF NORMAL. LESSONS LEARNED: 1) DO NOT ASSUME YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE -- VERIFY IT. 2) FINISH THE CHKLIST 'STOPPED' AT THE HOLD SHORT. GOOD JOB BY THE FO IN RECOGNIZING A POTENTIAL PROB AND CALLING IT OUT. IT SAVED ME FROM POSSIBLY TAXIING ACROSS AN ACTIVE RWY.
