Narrative:
Flight was proceeding to san on cardi 2 arrival. Approximately over lax VOR, aircraft cleared to about FL240. Arrival proceeds on lax 118 degree radial to cardi intersection, then on mzb 320 degree radial inbound. Crossing VOR, chart was misread and, instead of 118 degrees being selected, 140 degrees was put in omni bearing selector. Captain missed the error because he was copying san ATIS during descent, a TCASII RA sounded. At this point we both made visual contact with traffic and realized mistake. Turn was begun to reintercept correct radial but were close enough to get RA. ATC questioned us on our position. Aircraft were never in threat of collision but close enough to get RA. Incident occurred due to inattn on PF and distraction on PNF's part. To correct situation, have both pilots monitoring operations during altitude and course changes and only make extra duties (ATIS, company call) when established on course.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR MLG CREW SELECTED THE WRONG VOR RADIAL. THIS CAUSED A TCASII ALERT AND A POTENTIAL CONFLICT LTSS.
Narrative: FLT WAS PROCEEDING TO SAN ON CARDI 2 ARR. APPROX OVER LAX VOR, ACFT CLRED TO ABOUT FL240. ARR PROCEEDS ON LAX 118 DEG RADIAL TO CARDI INTXN, THEN ON MZB 320 DEG RADIAL INBOUND. XING VOR, CHART WAS MISREAD AND, INSTEAD OF 118 DEGS BEING SELECTED, 140 DEGS WAS PUT IN OMNI BEARING SELECTOR. CAPT MISSED THE ERROR BECAUSE HE WAS COPYING SAN ATIS DURING DSCNT, A TCASII RA SOUNDED. AT THIS POINT WE BOTH MADE VISUAL CONTACT WITH TFC AND REALIZED MISTAKE. TURN WAS BEGUN TO REINTERCEPT CORRECT RADIAL BUT WERE CLOSE ENOUGH TO GET RA. ATC QUESTIONED US ON OUR POS. ACFT WERE NEVER IN THREAT OF COLLISION BUT CLOSE ENOUGH TO GET RA. INCIDENT OCCURRED DUE TO INATTN ON PF AND DISTR ON PNF'S PART. TO CORRECT SIT, HAVE BOTH PLTS MONITORING OPS DURING ALT AND COURSE CHANGES AND ONLY MAKE EXTRA DUTIES (ATIS, COMPANY CALL) WHEN ESTABLISHED ON COURSE.
