Narrative:

Location: ese lhy. During departure climb vectors out of hpn, controller instructed us to turn 15 degrees right and intercept J87, on course. Flight plan and clearance was for J36. After 3 or 4 unanswered calls to center, he finally responded and apparently was confused as to our real clearance and filed route. After questioning, we were reclred direct to lhy and J36, flight plan route, etc. Controller was very busy and appeared to be in training as extremely long pauses between xmissions were occurring, etc. Our alleged intercept heading would never have taken us back to our real airway.
