Narrative:
During powerback from gate in memphis, right main landing gear rolled backwards off end of tarmac. Captain followed marshaller's instruction. No excessive speed or EPR during powerback. No sense of urgency from marshaller to stop or come forward. Very short distance from gate to end of taxiway. Powerback should not be allowed from this gate. I believe marshaller should have signaled us to come forward sooner. We were allowed to roll back entirely too far. There was 20 ft of asphalt after edge of taxiway, and we were allowed to cover that distance before departing prepared surface. There was no lag in captain following marshaller's instructions to come forward.
