Narrative:
Taxiing to takeoff, cleared to taxi out taxiway U, runway 28, and hold short of runway 23L. We missed the hold short line and crossed over it by several ft. We were still clear of the runway, but ground told us to taxi across runway 23L and into position on runway 23R. That area involves crossing several runways and txwys with little room for error. A clrer description of the expected hold short points on the commercial charts would be of great benefit. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter flies the DC9- 30. He used to live in cleveland and is aware of the taxi problem at cle, 'but still missed it!' he believes that showing the hold short line on the commercial airport page or a flashing light would help bring this to the attention of pilots as the hold short line is a long way from where people expect it to be. The ATCT ground controller did not seem to be at all concerned, and the reporter has not heard from the FAA on this.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR DC9-30 PLT CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 23L AT CLE. ERROR ADMITTED. TAXIING TFC.
Narrative: TAXIING TO TKOF, CLRED TO TAXI OUT TXWY U, RWY 28, AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 23L. WE MISSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE AND CROSSED OVER IT BY SEVERAL FT. WE WERE STILL CLR OF THE RWY, BUT GND TOLD US TO TAXI ACROSS RWY 23L AND INTO POS ON RWY 23R. THAT AREA INVOLVES XING SEVERAL RWYS AND TXWYS WITH LITTLE ROOM FOR ERROR. A CLRER DESCRIPTION OF THE EXPECTED HOLD SHORT POINTS ON THE COMMERCIAL CHARTS WOULD BE OF GREAT BENEFIT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR FLIES THE DC9- 30. HE USED TO LIVE IN CLEVELAND AND IS AWARE OF THE TAXI PROB AT CLE, 'BUT STILL MISSED IT!' HE BELIEVES THAT SHOWING THE HOLD SHORT LINE ON THE COMMERCIAL ARPT PAGE OR A FLASHING LIGHT WOULD HELP BRING THIS TO THE ATTN OF PLTS AS THE HOLD SHORT LINE IS A LONG WAY FROM WHERE PEOPLE EXPECT IT TO BE. THE ATCT GND CTLR DID NOT SEEM TO BE AT ALL CONCERNED, AND THE RPTR HAS NOT HEARD FROM THE FAA ON THIS.
