Narrative:
The aircraft was approaching the gate area, a guide man with lighted wands was idented at the end of the lead-in line. We cleared the area visually before proceeding to follow the guideman's instructions. We then followed the guideman's instructions till he gave us the stop signal. After stopping the aircraft and completing the parking checklist, it was found that the aircraft's engine cowl came in contact with the jetway. It created a gash approximately 5 inches in length on the top of the engine's cowl. Upon discussion with the ground service personnel, it was discovered that the jetway was svced for maintenance earlier that day and was not properly repositioned when maintenance was completed. The jetway was positioned approximately 3-4 ft beyond (extended) the safety zone. The guideman was responsible for the safety area to ensure the gate and ramp area was clear.
