Narrative:
Approach cleared us for an ILS to runway 22L, circle to land on runway 29. After crossing marker I initiated the circling maneuver for runway 29. At that time tower asked if we had air carrier 'Y' traffic in front of us because tower had lost him and said he had extended his downwind. I flew the approach and the captain looked for air carrier 'Y.' tower then located air carrier 'Y' and said he was lined up for final so I continued approach, at which time I turned back to the runway, but lost sight of runway as WX deteriorated. I then initiated a go around. We came back around for another approach and landing that was uneventful.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR FLC CONDUCTING A CIRCLING APCH IN AN MLG TO EWR IS FORCED TO EXTEND THEIR DOWNWIND FOR PRECEDING TFC SO THAT BY THE TIME THEY ARE APPROVED TO TURN TOWARD THE LNDG RWY THEY LOST SIGHT OF IT AND EXECUTED A GAR.
Narrative: APCH CLRED US FOR AN ILS TO RWY 22L, CIRCLE TO LAND ON RWY 29. AFTER XING MARKER I INITIATED THE CIRCLING MANEUVER FOR RWY 29. AT THAT TIME TWR ASKED IF WE HAD ACR 'Y' TFC IN FRONT OF US BECAUSE TWR HAD LOST HIM AND SAID HE HAD EXTENDED HIS DOWNWIND. I FLEW THE APCH AND THE CAPT LOOKED FOR ACR 'Y.' TWR THEN LOCATED ACR 'Y' AND SAID HE WAS LINED UP FOR FINAL SO I CONTINUED APCH, AT WHICH TIME I TURNED BACK TO THE RWY, BUT LOST SIGHT OF RWY AS WX DETERIORATED. I THEN INITIATED A GAR. WE CAME BACK AROUND FOR ANOTHER APCH AND LNDG THAT WAS UNEVENTFUL.
