Narrative:
Taxi from FBO for runway 1R. A lot of construction at airport plus was unfamiliar with airport. Passenger in plane also pilot. During routing on taxi I inadvertently crossed threshold of active runway, crossing to other side. Was in communication with tower. At one point asked our location. We stated at taxiway Z. Although on my diagram taxiway Z was at different spot. Both myself and passenger pilot a bit confused as to our locale. Tower stated they could not see us? Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter states the FAA contacted him recently and took information regarding medical and certification then stated they would listen to the tapes and contact him later. Reporter was not familiar with this airport at all. He was confused by ground instruction to cross runway 25R when he was at taxiway D and runway 7L. He wonders if controller knew where he was. It does not seem so when controller stated he could not see the reporter aircraft. He never saw a hold line when he taxied onto taxiway Z to indicate the runway 1R. Once on the other side of runway 1R he became aware of his error. Controller requested he make a 180 degree and allow the jet traffic to takeoff. He did and they did. He was then cleared for takeoff. He was requested to call tower upon arrival at destination. When he called the controller who was involved was not present and he spoke to a supervisor and explained the situation and confusion due to the construction on the taxiway and controller phraseology.

Title: SMA PLT BECOMES CONFUSED DURING TAXI AND CROSSES ACTIVE RWY THRESHOLD. STOPS WHEN REALIZING HIS ERROR.
Narrative: TAXI FROM FBO FOR RWY 1R. A LOT OF CONSTRUCTION AT ARPT PLUS WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH ARPT. PAX IN PLANE ALSO PLT. DURING ROUTING ON TAXI I INADVERTENTLY CROSSED THRESHOLD OF ACTIVE RWY, XING TO OTHER SIDE. WAS IN COM WITH TWR. AT ONE POINT ASKED OUR LOCATION. WE STATED AT TXWY Z. ALTHOUGH ON MY DIAGRAM TXWY Z WAS AT DIFFERENT SPOT. BOTH MYSELF AND PAX PLT A BIT CONFUSED AS TO OUR LOCALE. TWR STATED THEY COULD NOT SEE US? CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATES THE FAA CONTACTED HIM RECENTLY AND TOOK INFO REGARDING MEDICAL AND CERTIFICATION THEN STATED THEY WOULD LISTEN TO THE TAPES AND CONTACT HIM LATER. RPTR WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH THIS ARPT AT ALL. HE WAS CONFUSED BY GND INSTRUCTION TO CROSS RWY 25R WHEN HE WAS AT TXWY D AND RWY 7L. HE WONDERS IF CTLR KNEW WHERE HE WAS. IT DOES NOT SEEM SO WHEN CTLR STATED HE COULD NOT SEE THE RPTR ACFT. HE NEVER SAW A HOLD LINE WHEN HE TAXIED ONTO TXWY Z TO INDICATE THE RWY 1R. ONCE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF RWY 1R HE BECAME AWARE OF HIS ERROR. CTLR REQUESTED HE MAKE A 180 DEG AND ALLOW THE JET TFC TO TKOF. HE DID AND THEY DID. HE WAS THEN CLRED FOR TKOF. HE WAS REQUESTED TO CALL TWR UPON ARR AT DEST. WHEN HE CALLED THE CTLR WHO WAS INVOLVED WAS NOT PRESENT AND HE SPOKE TO A SUPVR AND EXPLAINED THE SIT AND CONFUSION DUE TO THE CONSTRUCTION ON THE TXWY AND CTLR PHRASEOLOGY.
