Misunderstood controller, thinking we were cleared for a visual for runway 18C when only cleared to intercept localizer for runway 18C. Controller questioned if we were maintaining 5000 ft after descending 300-400 ft below this altitude.

Narrative: MISUNDERSTOOD CTLR, THINKING WE WERE CLRED FOR A VISUAL FOR RWY 18C WHEN ONLY CLRED TO INTERCEPT LOC FOR RWY 18C. CTLR QUESTIONED IF WE WERE MAINTAINING 5000 FT AFTER DSNDING 300-400 FT BELOW THIS ALT.
