Narrative:
Aircraft citabria. Upon returning from douglas county airport, I listened to ATIS. Winds were from the east at 12 KTS with a tailwind component. Runway 7 closed from flooding damage. I observed the windsock on final. I made a normal crosswind approach and touched down 3 point. Once the tailwheel was on the ground, the aircraft swung to the right. I tried to correct with little effect, so I gave it power to take off (carburetor heat on, flaps down 2 notches). Upon applying power, aircraft pointed further to the right, but I was committed. I flew over the ditch to the right of the runway then noticed I was headed toward a runway sign and I thought I cleared it. I gained altitude and turned to the runway heading. Then I noticed my left strut was bent. I informed the tower to let them know my aircraft was damaged and that I would go around. The winds had picked up and I aborted the landing. Tower then informed me that winds were right down runway 8 at 12 KTS at stead airport. I flew to stead and made a normal approach and landing. I taxied to GA and tied down.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CITABRIA PLT ATTEMPTED TO LAND IN XWIND AND HAD LOSS OF ACFT CTL JUST AFTER TOUCHDOWN. GAR MADE AND TWR INFORMED OF MORE DIRECT WINDS AT NEARBY ARPT.
Narrative: ACFT CITABRIA. UPON RETURNING FROM DOUGLAS COUNTY ARPT, I LISTENED TO ATIS. WINDS WERE FROM THE E AT 12 KTS WITH A TAILWIND COMPONENT. RWY 7 CLOSED FROM FLOODING DAMAGE. I OBSERVED THE WINDSOCK ON FINAL. I MADE A NORMAL XWIND APCH AND TOUCHED DOWN 3 POINT. ONCE THE TAILWHEEL WAS ON THE GND, THE ACFT SWUNG TO THE R. I TRIED TO CORRECT WITH LITTLE EFFECT, SO I GAVE IT PWR TO TAKE OFF (CARB HEAT ON, FLAPS DOWN 2 NOTCHES). UPON APPLYING PWR, ACFT POINTED FURTHER TO THE R, BUT I WAS COMMITTED. I FLEW OVER THE DITCH TO THE R OF THE RWY THEN NOTICED I WAS HEADED TOWARD A RWY SIGN AND I THOUGHT I CLRED IT. I GAINED ALT AND TURNED TO THE RWY HDG. THEN I NOTICED MY L STRUT WAS BENT. I INFORMED THE TWR TO LET THEM KNOW MY ACFT WAS DAMAGED AND THAT I WOULD GO AROUND. THE WINDS HAD PICKED UP AND I ABORTED THE LNDG. TWR THEN INFORMED ME THAT WINDS WERE R DOWN RWY 8 AT 12 KTS AT STEAD ARPT. I FLEW TO STEAD AND MADE A NORMAL APCH AND LNDG. I TAXIED TO GA AND TIED DOWN.
