Narrative:
We were given a crossing restr to cross 20 mi southeast of rod at 15000 ft. During descent we were told to maintain visual separation with lower traffic at 15000 ft. We maintained visual contact and I maneuvered our aircraft to stay 1 1/2 mi away from traffic. While descending out of 16000 ft we received a TCASII RA and I complied with a climb back to 16000 ft other aircraft also complied with TCASII RA and descended. Both aircraft were never less than 1 - 1 1/2 mi separation. A better course of action would have been an off course heading for our descent instead of visual separation during a busy time in our flight.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: RPTR, DSNDING THROUGH 16000 FT, RECEIVES TCASII RA WITH CLB COMMAND ON TFC AT 15000 FT FROM WHICH RPTR IS MAINTAINING VISUAL SEPARATION. RPTR ADHERES TO THE CLB COMMAND. OTHER ACFT REACTED TO A TCASII RA TO DSND.
Narrative: WE WERE GIVEN A XING RESTR TO CROSS 20 MI SE OF ROD AT 15000 FT. DURING DSCNT WE WERE TOLD TO MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION WITH LOWER TFC AT 15000 FT. WE MAINTAINED VISUAL CONTACT AND I MANEUVERED OUR ACFT TO STAY 1 1/2 MI AWAY FROM TFC. WHILE DSNDING OUT OF 16000 FT WE RECEIVED A TCASII RA AND I COMPLIED WITH A CLB BACK TO 16000 FT OTHER ACFT ALSO COMPLIED WITH TCASII RA AND DSNDED. BOTH ACFT WERE NEVER LESS THAN 1 - 1 1/2 MI SEPARATION. A BETTER COURSE OF ACTION WOULD HAVE BEEN AN OFF COURSE HDG FOR OUR DSCNT INSTEAD OF VISUAL SEPARATION DURING A BUSY TIME IN OUR FLT.
