Narrative:

Very shortly after rotation, as the landing gear was in transit, a loud explosion/thump was heard, followed by a severe vibration felt along the entire aircraft. A complete loss of oil quantity, pressure, N1 and N2 at or near zero RPM, high egt, verified the failure of the left engine. The first officer was the PF when the failure occurred and he performed flawlessly. After completing and verifying that all memory items had been completed, I took over as the PF. All pertinent QRH procedures and checklists were performed, an emergency was declared with mke ATC and asked to have the emergency equipment standing by. Due to the severity of our emergency, an overweight landing was performed as described in our communication. After landing, we requested the emergency equipment to visually check the left side of the aircraft for possible fire, smoke, or other visible damage. No smoke/fire or other visible damage was observed, taxied to the gate.

Title: AN MD88 IMMEDIATELY AFTER ROTATION EXPERIENCED A CONTAINED FAILURE OF THE L ENG. EMER WAS DECLARED AND ACFT RETURNED TO THE FIELD.

Narrative: VERY SHORTLY AFTER ROTATION, AS THE LNDG GEAR WAS IN TRANSIT, A LOUD EXPLOSION/THUMP WAS HEARD, FOLLOWED BY A SEVERE VIBRATION FELT ALONG THE ENTIRE ACFT. A COMPLETE LOSS OF OIL QUANTITY, PRESSURE, N1 AND N2 AT OR NEAR ZERO RPM, HIGH EGT, VERIFIED THE FAILURE OF THE L ENG. THE FO WAS THE PF WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED AND HE PERFORMED FLAWLESSLY. AFTER COMPLETING AND VERIFYING THAT ALL MEMORY ITEMS HAD BEEN COMPLETED, I TOOK OVER AS THE PF. ALL PERTINENT QRH PROCS AND CHKLISTS WERE PERFORMED, AN EMER WAS DECLARED WITH MKE ATC AND ASKED TO HAVE THE EMER EQUIP STANDING BY. DUE TO THE SEVERITY OF OUR EMER, AN OVERWT LNDG WAS PERFORMED AS DESCRIBED IN OUR COM. AFTER LNDG, WE REQUESTED THE EMER EQUIP TO VISUALLY CHK THE L SIDE OF THE ACFT FOR POSSIBLE FIRE, SMOKE, OR OTHER VISIBLE DAMAGE. NO SMOKE/FIRE OR OTHER VISIBLE DAMAGE WAS OBSERVED, TAXIED TO THE GATE.
