Narrative:
Cavu day in april. Decided to fly my J3 cub at lunch time. Took aircraft out of hangar and got 'propeller' from a friend at the airport. Taxied out to active. Bayport has parallel grass runways. Only one is in use and the other is X'ed at any one time. Looked and saw no X's on either runway. Took off. Returned 30 mins later and landed. Noticed a truck on side of runway. Was informed airport was closed by NOTAM. They were in process of seeding and changing X'ed runway. There was no one there when I took off because they were out to lunch. I should have checked NOTAMS (always do for cross country flying in other plane). They should have X'ed both runways if field was closed. I will always check NOTAMS in the future. It's too easy to assume everything is the same as yesterday.
